Study reveals critical role of refrigeration in food waste, production and emissions

May 2021

The International Institute of Refrigeration says an improved cold chain would avoid 290 million tonnes of food losses, or 55% of the food losses attributable to the current cold chain. An improved global cold chain would also allow a reduction of almost 50% of the CO2 emissions of the current cold chain. The Institute is urging that the cold chain must become a national priority, not only in terms of food safety and health, but also in terms of contributing to the fight against global warming.
